Google Material Design - Alt text article
Overview:
Material Design is Google’s design system that is accessible to anyone. The design world looks to Google for inspiration and how-tos. I was very proud to co-write an article on how to write great alt text, as the previous one was out-dated.
Audience:
The primary audience is Google UX writers / content designers. The secondary audience is external UX writers / content designers and UX designers..
User goal:
To learn how to write good alt text quickly.
Business goal:
Create a simple article that covered the most common challenges in alt text writing and demonstrate how to approach them.
Challenges:
-There were multiple inconsistent sources of accessibility guidance at Google
-Due to the system limitations the alt text examples that became part of the images making the article itself inaccessible
-The UX designer wasn’t familiar with accessibility standards, and often presented inaccessible solutions
Process:
-We gathered source information internally and externally and decided which topics to cover
-I chose images from our stock photos to illustrate the points
-I wrote the alt text for the examples and then alt text of the image alt text
-To make the article accessible we put the alt text in the image in the caption
Results:
UX writers at Google found the article helpful. They liked that the information was all in one spot and it guided them
through how to think about alt text.
